On July 23, 2007, Hampton University broke ground on a new Proton Therapy Institute, located at 40 Enterprise Pkwy, Hampton, VA 23666. The center will provide beams of protons for destroying cancerous tumors non-invasively, quickly and with fewer side effects than traditional cancer treatments. Cynthia (Thia) Keppel, the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute's scientific and technical director, and a joint Jefferson Lab/Hampton University employee, spoke at and participated in the groundbreaking. It was one of the first such facilities built in the U.S.
